Energy – gas, electricity, fossil fuels
- Walk, cycle, or use public transport where possible
- Reduce speed when driving
- Wash clothes at lower temperature – 30 degrees
- Dry washing outdoors instead of the tumble dryer
- Use energy efficient lightbulbs
- Switch off lights when not using a room.
- Do not leave electrical items plugged in on standby
- Boil only the amount of hot water you need
Water
- Take shorter showers, saves water and energy
- Run a full dishwasher/washing machine
- Do not wash under a running tap
- Collect rainwater for use in the garden – install a water barrel
Plastics
- Avoid take out cups
- Use reusable coffee mugs and water bottles
- Use lunchboxes or paper or reusable sandwich bags instead of plastic bags
- Bring your own reusable bag when shopping
- Avoid toiletries and cosmetics with microbeads
Food choices
- Avoid food waste only buy and cook what you need
- Eat more vegetarian dishes
- Buy locally produced food
- Eat foods that are in season
- Consider the distance travelled “air-miles” when making food choices
- Consider buying fair trade goods
Protection of wildlife
- Weed your garden instead of using weedkiller
- Avoid the use of pesticides
- Plant pollinator friendly plants (bee-friendly plants)
Waste and Pollution
- Recycle where possible especially paper, plastic, glass and batteries
- Donate unwanted clothing to charity
- Use the brown bin for food waste
- Compost garden waste
- Use eco-friendly cleaning materials
- Think before you print – do you need a hard copy?
- Print on both sides of the paper
